Frequently asked questions

Getting started

Is Masaruna free?

Yes. Free to download and free to use, with no ads, no subscription and no paid tier waiting further in. Nothing in it is sold — not a feature, and not your data.

Do I need an account?

No. The app runs on your phone from the first launch: you take on commitments, record your days and receive reminders without signing in to anything.

The first time it has a connection it does create an unnamed account for this phone — no email, no password, and nothing but this phone able to reach it — so that a lost phone is not a lost year. Linking Apple or Google is a separate step you can take whenever you like, and it is what lets a second phone reach the same record.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. Everything you do daily is computed on your phone: today's list, the check-ins, the calendar behind a commitment, the prayer times and the reminders that arrive at them. None of it waits on a network.

A connection matters for two things only — keeping the backup copy current, and the groups you are in.

How many commitments can I keep?

As many as you want; the app sets no limit.

It is built for a handful, though. The home screen is meant to be one you can close in ten seconds, and a list of thirty is a list nobody finishes. Two or three, until they have settled, is a better start than ten.

Can I add a commitment of my own?

Yes. Alongside the app's library you can write your own, with a title and a note in your own words.

One you wrote yourself stays yours: it is never witnessed, and cannot be added to a group. Only the library's own commitments can be shared.

Groups & witnesses

What can the people in my group see?

For each commitment the group carries, whether you kept it today. A yes or a no.

Nothing else travels with it: not the days you set it on, not the time you are reminded, not your history before today, and not the commitments you keep outside the group. There is no leaderboard and no streak for anyone else to read.

How do I join or start a group?

Three ways in, all on the Groups screen: browse the public groups, paste an invite link somebody sent you, or type the code on its own if it arrived somewhere the app cannot see. Starting a group of your own is on the same screen.

Groups live on the server, so being in one means having an account. The unnamed one your phone already has is enough.

Can I go by a different name in each group?

Yes. The name shown beside you belongs to that membership, not to your account, so you can go by one name among family and another in a study circle.

In a public group there is no name at all — presence there is counted, never attributed.

Account & data

How do I move my record to a new phone?

Link the same Apple or Google account on both, from Settings → Backup.

Syncing merges the two records rather than replacing either one, so a day you recorded on the old phone and a day you recorded on the new one both survive. Nothing is overwritten, and no part of the app wipes what is already on a phone.

Where is my record kept?

On your phone first, in a database inside the app. A copy is kept on our server too — your commitments, the days you kept them, your pauses and your preferences — so that a lost phone is not a lost year.

Two things are never in that copy: the location prayer times are computed from, and the queue your phone keeps its own reminders in. The privacy policy sets out the rest in full.

Where do prayer times come from?

They are computed on your phone, from an approximate location that never leaves it. The fix is rounded to about a kilometre — far coarser than a street, and still exact for a prayer time.

Settings → Prayer times chooses the calculation method, or leaves it on the convention the app picks for your country.

What happens if I delete the app?

The copy on your phone goes with it. If you never linked an account, the unnamed copy on the server is swept on its own once no device has opened it for ninety days.

Settings → Backup governs the server side directly while the app is installed: whether a copy is kept at all, and which account holds it.
